4. Shape

A special set of latex inserts were made to alter the basic shape of the cup of the chin rest. These latex inserts fit into the cup of the chinrest and were fixed in place with spray glue. For comfort, they were covered with chamois leather. Some inserts were made that only filled in the cup to make it slightly flatter, and others that softened the front edge of the chinrest. These helped us to decide if the original chin rest cup was too deep for comfort, or the edge was too sharp. Then we knew better how to form the cup of the custom chin rest (in wood) for each person.
